About

This project mainly designs a funeral mode in which ashes are sprinkled into space after people die. It can alleviate the land problem caused by cemeteries in the future. An app is designed according to the space funeral. In the future, families can mourn their dead relatives online to alleviate people's anxiety about death.

Research

In 1997, Kim Rodin Bailey, the producer of the science fiction TV series "Interstellar Travel", pioneered the creation of his ashes by rockets into the boundless universe.

Since the world’s first space funeral was held in 1997, space funerals have not only been chosen by celebrities and scientists, but also those who loved the universe during their lifetimes. As of 2007, "Space Services" customers include Americans, Canadians, British, Germans, Japanese and Austrians.

Three Ways to Launch

1

Goddess Scatters Flowers

Vitaly Fedorov was a renowned figure in Russian rocketry and spaceflight. After his death, the Russian Federation Aerospace Agency held a space funeral in his honor, launching his ashes into orbit via a Soyuz rocket. The British company Ascension Flights also offers services to send ashes to the stratosphere, where they create a beautiful, shimmering scene when dispersed.

2

Return to the ground

This method is relatively more acceptable. It is a symbolic very small amount of ashes of the staff (usually a few laps or so). Generally, in a small body, flying around the surface in space or two laps in space, the parachute helicopter landed on The surface of the earth, or rise to a greater height and then return.

3

Lifetime travel

The memorial spacecraft carrying the urn, as the rocket launches into the sky, the spacecraft will orbit the earth for about two years, then fall into the atmosphere and burn on its own, disappearing into the vast universe.

Outer Space Funerals gaining attention

There are not too many problems in carrying the dead to heaven.

At this stage, it is basically hopeless for humans to immigrate to outer space.

1

One is that the urn does not occupy a large area, as long as there is space for the launch vehicle, it can be placed.

2

In addition to the harsh environmental problems in outer space, the biological rhythms that humans have formed on Earth for hundreds  of millions of years are also difficult to change.

3

The concept of "home town" is becoming increasingly diluted. With an outer space funeral, people can feel connected to their loved ones regardless of where they are on Earth.

1

Secondly, the urn has become an item. The urn will not be affected by the high radiation, low gravity and harsh environment in space.

2

In the future, humanity will certainly become a multi-planetary species. As such, funerals for humans will not necessarily be confined to the Earth, but rather could take place in the vast reaches of universe.

3

Constrained by the high cost of cemeteries on the earth, more and more people choose to be served by space funeral home companies. Earth orbit will be regarded as an important strategic resource in the future.

User Persona

Young People (18-30)

90% acceptability

About 90% of young people believe that space funeral is the funeral method they want tochoose. Space burial can reduce the occupation of theearth's land area by funeral. Atthe same time, it can also have special significance incommemoration.

Middle aged (30-50)

85% acceptability

Most middle-aged p eople alsosupport the concept of space funeral. They believe that space funeral can become a new way to make death no longer heavy in thefuture. Secondly, space funeral can reduce the pressure onchildren to buy traditionalcemeteries.

The elderly (50-70)

63% acceptability

More than 50% of the middle-aged and elderly people support space funeral. Some middle-agedand elderly people put forward ideas that they will not try. They believe that space funeral cananot let them leave the familiar earth after their death, which is anunknown drifting.

The elderly (Over 70)

48% acceptability

They believe that sprinkling into space after death is an act of abandonment, which is as desperate as no tombstone and no one cares. Most of them still hope to have their own tombstones and be remembered by future generations.

Design Concept

Through the preliminary research and interview questionnaire data, it is found that people have a strong ability to accept space funeral. Therefore, this project hopes to design an app that combines space funeral. Let the family members of the deceased see the location of the ashes through the app. In addition, some commemorative videos, audio and pictures of the dead can be saved in the app as memories.
